What is CoWork Computer Use?

CoWork Computer Use is the groundbreaking agentic feature in Anthropic's Claude Desktop app (part of Claude Cowork and Claude Code). It transforms Claude from a conversational AI into a true desktop agent that can interact with your computer exactly like a human — viewing the screen, controlling the cursor, clicking buttons, typing text, opening apps, and working directly with your local files.

Originally launched as part of Claude Cowork (the non-coding agent version of Claude Code), the Computer Use capability brings full screen-awareness and GUI control, enabling autonomous multi-step work on your actual desktop environment.

How It Works

1. Download and open the latest Claude Desktop app (macOS or Windows).
2. Switch to the Cowork tab and select a folder or grant Computer Use permissions.
3. Describe the task in plain English (e.g., "Organize my Downloads folder by date and type" or "Process these receipts into an expense report spreadsheet").
4. Claude analyzes, creates a step-by-step plan, shows it for review, then executes directly on your computer.
5. Monitor progress in real time, intervene if needed, or let it run in the background.

Everything stays local — conversation history and work are stored only on your machine.

• Computer must stay awake and app open during long tasks.

Currently in research preview with rapid improvements. Computer Use was recently expanded to both Cowork and Code for Pro and Max users.

Security & Privacy

• Runs in a secure VM with strict sandboxing.
• User must explicitly approve file changes, deletions, and network access.
• No data leaves your machine unless you use external connectors.
• Conversation history is stored locally and not used for Anthropic training.
